Ethan and Benji had a deal. Not anything big, really, just a deal which is from a team leader to his teammate. Sometime Benji even felt a little weird about it. Because when he mentioned it to Brandt oneday, that very gentleman just looked at him, and said:” well, I’m sure this is an impossible promise.” From his deep heart, Benji knew it was true, because of course no one in the world had the ability to let nothing happen to someone, even Ethan Hunt.
Whatever, he smiled and shrugged: “well, he did it, didn’t he?”
It was not the word, but the way Ethan put his hand on Benji’s shoulder, the look he gave Benji whenever he said something stupidor amazing or both, the smile, the laugh that they shared over and over and over, it was all of these, which secured Benji that he was safe, even wore a bomb vest, even hung by the same man twice.
So, this was where the story began.

At first, it was the commonplace.

Because they had more than one billion way to make you rather die. However, Agent Hunt never had suffered from this since Benji Dunn joined the IMF. “I need the information about a dealer named Kallus.Ethan, by the way. And you are…”
“Oh, oh! Sorry, eh, Benji Dunn. Nice to meet you. Not the first time, but still nice. And one minute. Here we go! Your information.”
He had a pair of very very bright eyes, Ethan thought.He was passionate, dedicated, professional. He was young (he had forgotten himself was young too), but in the future, he would make the best.
He would be an excellent colleague, he thought vaguely.
Then they shook hands, said thank you and good bye.

And then, it was the hobbit.
Ethan went used to protect people, to make them feel safe, trust themselves can do anything impossible with him. He thought he had made it clear, he wouldn’t let bad things happen to his teammate. He was that field agent.
But it seemed that Benji always forgot about it.
And it was not like that he didn’t trust Ethan, infact, Ethan didn’t know if there could be anyone else on the earth had more faith on him than Benji. He just, Ethan knew, didn’t believe himself. That was why he fluctuated from confident to nervous.
So he must say the words again and again. That wasteam leader’s responsibility, to make your teammate relived, self-confident.
After all, that was truth.

In the end, it somehow became a deal.
“I won’t let anything happen to you.” Ethan said.
“Yeah. Alright. I know. Thanks.” Benji moved from foot to foot.
“Relax.”
“OK.” Benji said, “sorry for the babbling, but how is Ilsa? I believe you two…Oh, that is none of my business. Sorry.”
“It’s OK.”
“OK. The gate will open in three seconds. Now.”
“Turn left.” Ethan held Benji’s right elbow and led him to a narrow alley.
“You know what, I am really appreciate that people always check their phones nowadays. Ten years ago, you were a nerd if you did that,but if you don’t act like that today it only shows you are lonely. No one talk to, to some extent. But I prefer face to face, even me, sometimes.”
“Benji.”
“Ok. We made it, didn’t we? Now, you jump, and I’llcatch you. Wait for my signal.”
“It will be fine.”
“Yes. Of course. That’s the deal, right? Nothing will happen to me and I will catch you.”
“Ready?”
“Yeah. Yeah.”

That was a broken promise.
Everyone knew that.
One day, they would have to paid their life for theworld’s safety. One day, they would have to lose someone, in front of them or on a green screen or just through ears. One day, bad things would happen and no one could stop them in time.
But not today, not this time.
Benji had this faith in them, in all of them.
“It will make things different.” Ethan said, stared at his ring, on the third finger. It wouldn’t stay on it more than ten minutes more, then it would be put into a top-secret box in IMF headquarters. So he decided to look at it as long as possible, brand the scene into memory, as the accounts of 2.4 billion dollars, even more vividly than that, to make sure it wouldnever fade out.
“Yeah, it is official, now.” Benji said. He seemed like he still couldn’t believe what just happened. “Not that I care about the official,but I do care them in some certain circumstances.”
“To make sure it official.”
“Exactly. What are we going to do this.”
That was not a question.
So they smiled, and sealed the deal with kiss.
